How to detox your body - Part 1

Detox your body

So, here we go, my first blog post for Detox to Live. In this post, I will go through the why and how to detox your body.

This will the first in a series of blog posts about how to detox your body in a safe and responsible way.

Basics on how to detox your body

First, let’s get down to the basics. If you do a google search on detox or detoxification or detox water or any of these terms you will get millions of answers. But what does it mean to flush your body of toxins? And why would you or should you do it in the first place?
You are exposed every day to more and more toxins, we have managed to put so many toxins in our environment that we just can not escape it anymore. And more and more people are realizing that there is something they can do to help their body. There are also people who are of the opinion that our body is more than capable of cleaning itself.

I would agree with that statement if we would live in a clean environment and we would eat healthy and clean foods, then our you would not need to detox your body. But since we do not live in a clean environment and we do not always eat the most healthy foods, we do need to give our body a little help.

Detox your body when you have an illness

Then there is also a group of people, of which I am one, that acquired a chronic illness of which they are trying to cure themselves. Whether you are using medicine or you are using alternative methods to try and get healthy, during these procedures, you need to make sure your body gets rid of all the waste products we call toxins.

I am an opponent of using what nature has to offer when it comes to getting back to health. So when it comes to detox your body, I follow the natural processes and functions of cleaning, clearing, and cleansing, getting rid of waste and toxins from the body. These functions are typically handled by organs like the liver, lower gastrointestinal tract, and kidneys. The normally used term for these procedures would be alternative medicine. Which is an interesting term, since some of these methods have been used for thousands of years. It is only less than a century ago that chemicals and medicine as we now know them were introduced. But that is another discussion for another post.

So, what are toxins and what is detoxification?

For starters, detoxing is not something which your doctor or the hospital will prescribe for you, which makes it part of the alternative medicine field. It is not something that was invented in the last few years, detoxing has been done for thousands of years. Therefore it can involve some ancient and traditional methods too.

Now the answer to the “what is detox” question.
Detoxing is a method of getting rid of unwanted toxins from your body.

What are toxins?

I looked it up on
“a poisonous substance that is a specific product of the metabolic activities of a living organism and is usually very unstable, notably toxic when introduced into the tissues, and typically capable of inducing antibody formation”
In other words, it is a harmful substance you don’t want in your body.

Your body does create toxins just by you being alive. These would be internal toxins. We are breathing, burning energy, cells are dying, our body is replacing and repairing our body, we get attacked by viruses which our immune systems attacks and kills. All this happens day and day out. Our body has a waste removal system in place to get rid of these internal toxins. Our liver and kidneys together with our gastrointestinal tract are able to remove this waste material.

External exposure to toxins

Then there are external toxins. As soon as you exist, you are exposed to all kinds of toxins. As I mentioned in the intro, our environment is so full of toxins, we can’t avoid getting toxified by our environment.
Think about it for a second.

You get out of bed and step into the bathroom and you

  • use toilet paper might be whitened with chlorine,
  • brush your teeth with a toothpaste containing fluoride,
  • rinse your mouth with water containing fluoride
  • take a shower and use a soap containing several chemicals
  • dry your body with a towel, which was washed with a chemical soap
  • put on deodorant containing aluminum
  • use gel or mousse in your hair containing several chemicals
  • get in your clothes, which were also washed with a chemical soap

Boy, your day starts off good, doesn’t it?
Then there is:

  • breakfast, processed food containing pesticides
  • coffee, containing pesticides
  • fruit, GMO altered and sprayed with pesticides
  • taking painkillers against a headache that is been bothering you for days now
  • maybe you take prescription medicine as well
  • you leave for work, get in a traffic jam, inhaling smog

And what about:

  • the mercury fillings in your teeth
  • the treated lumber in your backyard
  • the preservatives in the vaccines you got from your doctor

Well, you get the picture

Besides all the physical toxins, there is also things we do everyday in the way we conduct ourselves that contribute to build up and can cause all kinds of illnesses. We are surrounded by Wifi, GSM and portable phone signals all day. Are stresslevels are over the moon. That so called friend that we actually don’t really need. Let’s call this toxic behaviors.

Do you really expect our body to be able to clean this all up?

The problem is that these toxins start accumulating in your body. Once your body can’t properly dispose of these toxins anymore is when the problems start.
The following list of symptoms can all be the result of high toxicity in your body:

  • bloated feeling
  • foggy brain and concentration issues
  • irritated intestine
  • bellyache
  • constipation or diarrhea
  • rash
  • eczema
  • psoriasis
  • high blood pressure
  • overweight
  • headache
  • fatigue
  • shortage of energy
  • candida
  • insomnia

The amount of people with a chronic illness is astonishing. What is also disturbing is the enormous amount of people with anxiety disorder or depression.

And please, let me stress this, if you have one or more of these symptoms, please consult a healthcare professional or alternative practitioner before starting to do a detox procedure on your own. They will also be able to monitor your progress and answer any questions you might have. These symptoms may be the result of too much waste in your body, but they might also be related to some other, serious, condition.

The answer to the “how to detox” question

There are many ways to detox your body, some more effective than others. Not all of these methods are suitable for everybody or in every situation. That is the reason I do advise you to seek counsel with a local alternative practitioner who does have experience with detoxing.

Methods to detox your body

The following list shows a number of different options to detox your body:

  • diet, changing your nutritional lifestyle
  • master cleanse
  • oil pulling
  • contrast showers
  • fasting
  • acupuncture
  • herbal supplements
  • colon hydrotherapy and/or enemas
  • exercise
  • sweat lodges and/or saunas

In the next blog post, I’ll write, “How to detox your body – Part 2” I will go into some more detail about these different methods.

Welcome to

This blog is managed by people who have had health issues for a long time. The regular healthcare system can give you all kinds of diagnoses and usually the answer is, we can’t make you healthy, but we will give you medicine that might help you, they might have all kinds of side effects and you need to keep taking them for the rest of your life.

We don’t really like signing up for that. We wanted to know what the underlying causes are and the regular healthcare system was not able to answer those questions.
